Community Update – August 28

Community Update: August 28, 2020

Dear community members:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and perseverance during these very trying times. I am proud of the ways we have risen to every challenge as a community. Here are the news updates for this week:

COVID-19 Status

We have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane Senior Living Community.

Do You Need Vital Assistance from a Family Member or Friend?

State and Health Department guidelines prohibit us from welcoming friends or family members for social visits. However, we know there are residents who relied on loved ones to provide vital health, wellness and housekeeping tasks before the pandemic. If your wellbeing has been compromised by the visitor restriction, please call the Front Desk and ask to speak with one of our two Service Coordinators: Kirk or Crystal. We want to work with you.

Severe Weather Alert: Extreme Heat Followed by Hurricane Laura

After peak heat indices of 100 to 105 degrees Thursday and Friday, Hurricane Laura will bring the potential for locally heavy rain, gusty winds, flooding and tornadoes on Saturday. Please have an emergency kit with food, water and medicines ready, and take all necessary precautions to stay safe indoors during these weather events.

Door-to-Door Flu Shots

On Wednesday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from CVS will administer a free flu vaccine to any resident who wants one. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. A registration form must be completed by September 4. Call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal to register.

St. Mary’s County Health Department Reopens for Appointment-based Services

Beginning September 1, 2020, the St. Mary’s County Health Department will reopen select services by appointment beginning September 1, 2020. If you are in need of a birth certificate or death certificate, you may make an appointment with the Vital Records division by calling 301-475-4330. COVID-19 Testing will continue to be available without an appointment. For more information on local testing options, please call the COVID Community Hotline at 301-475-4911.

Senior Check program

Maryland is the first state in the country to start a free, opt-in, phone service to check on Maryland’s older residents, all across the state. Would you like to receive a phone call every day at a regularly scheduled time between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.? Just call 1-866-502-CHECK to enroll. This is a wonderful resource, particularly during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Thank you to Friends of Cedar Lane for Yesterday’s Dinner

I’m sure you join me in sending big thanks to Friends of Cedar Lane and all our generous supporters for treating residents to a fried chicken dinner with potato salad, coleslaw, a roll and a cookie from Chaptico Market. What did you think of this dinner? Which caterer has made the best fried chicken so far?

Welcoming Lynn Pawlowitz to the Cedar Lane Team

We are excited to announce that Lynn Pawlowitz will be joining our staff as a part-time accounts receivables specialist in the finance office.

Parking Reminder

During daytime hours, staff members and caregivers are not to use the parking spaces located at the front of Cedar Lane Senior Living Community. These spaces are reserved for residents only. For safety reasons, staff members or caregivers who arrive and leave during overnight hours may use an empty space up front if one is available.

Front Entrance Reminder

Please do not give anyone access to Cedar Lane through side or rear doors. This violates the visitation policy that was established by Cedar Lane and recommended by the Health Department. All arrivals are to take place through the Front Desk.

Apartment Inspections Continue

On behalf of the Facilities team, I want to thank those of you who have worked with us on our goal to catch up with routine apartment inspections. If we haven’t gotten to your apartment yet, we will be notifying you shortly.

Leonardtown Needs Your Input

The Town of Leonardtown was awarded a $100,000 grant by the Maryland Heritage Area Authority to purchase an authentic paddlewheel riverboat, in hopes it will bring more activity and development to Leonardtown’s waterfront. The Town Council will vote on whether to approve this project based on what they hear from the citizens of Leonardtown – and that includes you. Please take a few minutes to give them your thoughts! Call 301-475-9791.
