Community Update – March 12, 2021

A colorful graphic of the word " update ".

Dear Cedar Lane tenants, families and staff members,

I’m excited to share some happy news with you in my first update to the community as Cedar Lane’s new President & CEO. Following the latest directives from health experts and Governor Hogan, we have a plan to ease some social restrictions, while minimizing the health impacts of COVID-19. After the ultimate year of no, no, no, l hope you are ready to say a big, safe yes to some exciting changes:

YES TO VISITATION RETURNING – APRIL 1, 2021

  • The campus is currently closed to visitors.
  • Beginning April 1, 2021, visitors will be welcomed to Cedar Lane during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Please limit your visitors to two at a time.
  • See the attachment for complete visitor guidelines.

YES TO ACTIVITIES RETURNING – APRIL 1, 2021

  • Cedar Lane’s activity coordinator, Tonya Tyer, is working on an April calendar of small group activities and gatherings with sanitization and safety procedures in place. Yes, that includes everyone’s favorite – Bingo!
  • Cedar Lane will offer planned activities in sessions on a sign-up basis to keep group sizes manageable.

YES TO ONGOING COVID-19 SAFETY GUIDELINES:

  • Masks and social distancing in all public spaces are still mandated

by the State of Maryland and will be enforced at Cedar Lane.

  • Anyone entering the building must use the main entrance.
  • Everyone entering the building must pass a temperature check.

RESULTS OF COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINICS AT CEDAR LANE:

When I received the final counts of participants in Cedar Lane’s vaccination clinics, I was amazed. These numbers are unheard of in other communities. Way to go, Cedar Lane! I want to thank everyone who came out to the clinics for being part of the solution. Here are the numbers:

  • Church Building – 74.29% vaccinated
  • Burch Building – 88% vaccinated
  • Colton-Weinberg Building – 90.3% vaccinated
  • Campus Total – 81.13% vaccinated

I encourage anyone who hasn’t received the vaccine and would like to, to call St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services at (301) 475-4200, ext. 1049 for assistance making an appointment.

SELF PICK-UP FOR DOA&HS MEALS BEGINS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17:

Beginning this Wednesday, staff will no longer be delivering the meals provided by the Department of Aging & Human Services. Residents who participate in the meal program can pick up their packaged meals in the Dining Room the following days and times:

  • Mondays: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Please come prepared to carry your bag(s) back to your apartment.

TWO OF THREE BUILDINGS HAVE RECEIVED NEW DOOR LOCKS

The lock installers are making great time! They have completed the lock replacements in the Burch and Colton-Weinberg Buildings, and are now working their way through the Church Building. Family members who need to exchange their old key cards for a new key fob can inquire at the Front Desk.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT PROJECT IN THE CHURCH BUILDING

Here’s more good news. We have signed a contract to replace select windows in the Church Building, with a tentative start date in April.

SOCIAL DISTANCING REMINDER

Over the coming days, you will see some of the seating returning to hallways and common areas. Residents are welcome to use them, but please remember to keep a safe social distance of six feet or more between you and your neighbors, and not block hallways so that others may pass.

Thank you for being attentive to our policies as we slowly and thoughtfully start our reopening plan. I appreciate your commitment to all safety practices. By carefully managing these initial reopening steps, we are setting the course for a successful 2021. Together, we can make great things happen!

Sincerely,

Eric Golden

Community Update – February 26, 2021

A man and woman smiling for the camera.

Meet Eric Golden

President & CEO of Cedar Lane Senior Living Community

Cedar Lane is thrilled to welcome Eric Golden as our new President & CEO. Eric comes to Cedar Lane from Mount Royal Towers in Homewood, Alabama, where he served as Director of the community’s Activ-Care Living since March 2017. There he was responsible for the overall daily operation of the community.

Prior to his years with Mount Royal Towers, he served as District manager for Healthcare Services Group based in Bensalem, Pennsylvania from 2012 to 2016. There he oversaw supervision and management of more than 16 long-term care facility contracts, including 22 management team members in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

From 2010 to 2012, Eric served as Associate Executive Director for Towne Village Retirement Community in Vestavia, Alabama. In this role, he supervised a 70-bed independent living facility, coordinating the efforts of several departments including activities, dietary, maintenance, transportation and housekeeping.

“I am grateful to accept a leadership position with Cedar Lane — a well-established and respected organization with an impressive history of serving seniors,” says Golden. “My goal in leading this organization is to build on the achievements of the past 44 years. I am looking forward to getting to know you all in the coming weeks.”

Fun Facts about Eric:

  • Married 27 years
  • Two sons and two grandchildren
  • A former marine
  • Licensed Category II Administrator in Alabama
  • Loves SEC Football
  • Interesting family tidbit: Before his family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, Eric’s older siblings attended school with the Jackson 5 (specifically Marlon, Jermaine and Tito Jackson) in Gary, Indiana.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

Earlier today, the Health Department conducted the last of three COVID-19 vaccine clinics on our campus. I am grateful to every resident, staff member and caregiver who participated, and for the hardworking healthcare workers who made these vaccines possible. If you did not receive the vaccine and wish to do so, the vaccine is available from local pharmacies and the St. Mary’s County Health Department. We currently have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane!

Revised Quarantine Requirements

It’s not the end of the COVID-19 pandemic by a long shot, but we do see a light at the end of the tunnel. Cedar Lane is revising the mandatory quarantine period for new residents moving in. The new policy will waive the quarantine period for new residents with proof of vaccination and completion of the required waiting period or a negative COVID-19 test result. Everyone’s safety and well-being remains our greatest concern.

Eric Golden Takes Over Daily Operations on Monday

My successor Eric Golden is assuming responsibility for the day-to-day operations of Cedar Lane on Monday, March 1, while I work on wrapping up some ongoing projects and help to provide a seamless transition. The attached feature on Eric will help you get to know him a little better. He’s certainly looking forward to meeting his new Cedar Lane family.

 Breezeway Roofing Project

We apologize for the noise! The breezeway that connects the Church and Burch Buildings received a much-needed roof replacement this week. We estimate the previous roof to be more than 30 years old. It had surpassed its life expectancy and was letting moisture into the breezeway. The new roof will see Cedar Lane through another 15 years before the warranty is up.

Lock Replacement Project

I know, I know. We’ve been talking about the lock replacement project for almost a year. For a host of reasons, this upgrade has proven to be one of our more challenging projects to coordinate. The good news is the locks are here! The installers arrive next week and will begin swapping out the old locks the morning of Saturday, March 6. We will begin at 9 a.m. in the Colton Weinberg Building (Building III) and work ten straight days to make our way through all three buildings, changing out every lock on campus. You will receive a notice specifying the exact date of your lock installation. A member of our maintenance team will accompany the installers as they make their rounds.

Apartment Inspections Resuming

Cedar Lane is resuming regular apartment inspections after suspending them last March due to the health crisis. “Mini inspections” were completed to identify immediate problem areas, but now we must take a closer look at each unit.  We are hoping to complete five inspections a day. Our maintenance team will conduct the inspections, and Emma Morris will notify you in advance that we are coming. The goal of the inspection is to ensure the physical elements of your apartment are in proper working order. Each inspection should take 15 minutes or less. You don’t need to be home. If you are home, we will ask you to step into the hallway to social distance. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

I hope you managed to enjoy the sunshine and warmer temperatures over the past few days. It looks like it will be a rainy weekend here in southern Maryland. Time to find a good movie or an interesting book!

With Eric Golden assuming his position as President & CEO on Monday, this will be my final community update. Words can’t begin to express the role that the people of Cedar Lane have played in my life over the past 17 years. I thank each of you for the support, understanding, memories, laughs and candid comments.  I have always appreciated your honesty and your willingness to reach out to me.  You will not be forgotten!

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

Community Update – February 12

A tree with the words community update in front of it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

The weather isn’t ideal, but the month of February does give us several reasons to celebrate, including Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, Presidents’ Day, and the completion of the second COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Cedar Lane. Do you want another reason? As of today, we have no active cases of COVID-19.

How many community members received vaccinations last Sunday?

At the end of the day, 153 residents, 16 staffers and 8 certified caregivers received vaccinations on February 7 at Cedar Lane. The vaccine clinic began on time, ran smoothly, and enabled everyone to safely social distance. Best of all, we had no severe reactions to report. I personally heard from many of you that it was a very good experience. I’m grateful to everyone who participated, including the healthcare workers who came out in the snow to ensure we received our vaccines.

Third vaccine clinic

If you have received two doses of the vaccine, congratulations – you are done! The Health Department will conduct a third (much smaller) vaccine clinic at Cedar Lane for community members who have not yet received both shots. We will announce the date once the Health Department has confirmed it. If you are a Cedar Lane resident or certified caregiver and want to receive the vaccine, please call the Front Desk at 301-475-8966 and ask for Crystal or Kirk to register.

Vaccinations make you safer but not bulletproof

The vaccine will work with your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed. Currently, it is unknown if the vaccine prevents you from transmitting COVID-19 to other people, even if you’re not sick. The combination of getting vaccinated and following the CDC’s recommendations to protect yourself and others will offer the best protection from COVID-19. For now, we must continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash our hands frequently.

Presidents’ Day – Monday, February 15

  • Staff will be working on Monday, and will be reachable by phone.
  • Kirk and Crystal will deliver DOA&HS meals on Monday as usual.
  • The St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) and ADA will operate on a normal schedule for President’s Day.

Fat Tuesday Feast – Tuesday, February 16

It’s Mardi Gras time! The Friends of Cedar Lane will treat residents to a festive dinner of Nawlins Fish n’ Shrimp, lightly spiced Jambalaya Rice, steamed broccoli and garlicky butter rolls prepared by Flavaz Catering. Staff members will oversee door-to-door deliveries starting at 2 p.m. Please plan to be home and remember your mask when answering the door.

Do you need to arrange a video visit with your doctor? Would you like to join your loved ones for a virtual visit on “Zoom?”

Cedar Lane has iPad tablets to lend to residents – free of charge! You can use these tablets to surf the internet, have a telehealth meeting with your doctor, check in with friends on social media, shop online, or stay connected with the people you care about while maintaining a safe social distance. Tell us what you want to do and we can show you how! The iPads are available 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (weekends on a case-by-case basis.) Please make an appointment in advance by calling the Front Desk and asking for Kirk Turner or Crystal King in Service Coordination.

Wintery Weather Weekend

The forecast is calling for a mix of sleet, snow, rain and freezing rain through the weekend. Plan to stay in and avoid travelling if you can, and use extreme caution if you must go out. When venturing outside watch your step. Paved areas and sidewalks could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

Lock Replacement Project

We are awaiting confirmation from the vendor on the date for installation of Cedar Lane’s new contact-free door locks. Lock replacement will begin with the Colton-Weinberg Building. We will provide advance notice of your door lock installation.

 Eric Golden Starts February 22

Last but certainly not least, Eric Golden, Cedar Lane’s incoming President & CEO, is wrapping up his last week at Mount Royal Towers in Alabama and packing his bags for Southern Maryland. He will join me here on property February 22 and is looking forward to meeting the fantastic people who call Cedar Lane home.

I wish you all a nice weekend. Valentine’s Day is a holiday everyone can celebrate. This is a great time to let your family members, friends and neighbors know just how much they mean to you.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles, President & CEO

Community Update – January 29, 2021

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

I’m opening today’s update with two pieces of good news. The first: as of today, Cedar Lane has no known active cases of COVID-19. The second: our next onsite vaccine clinic has been scheduled. With reports of vaccine demand far exceeding supply, our community is incredibly fortunate to be given this opportunity by the St. Mary’s County Health Department.

Our second vaccine clinic will take place on February 2:

Thanks to everyone who filled out pre-registration forms this week. For those who registered, your appointment time is attached to this update. If this is your second dose of the vaccine, it is important to bring the Vaccination Record card that you received with you. If you have misplaced your Vaccination Record card, please call the front desk right away and ask for Crystal. To avoid the lines and crowds that we experienced at the first clinic, the appointment times will be more spread out. We need your help to safely social distance. Please come at your scheduled appointment time and do not come early. If you have questions, please call the Front Desk and ask for Crystal.

Do we have to continue with precautions after we’ve been vaccinated?

It may seem counterintuitive, but health officials say that even after you get vaccinated against COVID-19, you still need to practice the usual pandemic precautions, at least for a while. That means steering clear of crowds, continuing to wear a good mask in public, maintaining 6 feet or more of distance from people outside your household and frequently washing your hands.

Our campus-wide lock replacement projects will begin February 15 or 22:

Lock replacement will begin in the Colton-Weinberg Building and continue until all locks campus-wide are changed. Installers accompanied by a member of Cedar Lane’s maintenance team will come door to door with the new locks. You can choose to leave your apartment while we switch out the lock, or just social distance inside. Your current apartment key card will be replaced with a contact-free key fob. Residents and any family members/care givers who currently have a key card can trade in their old key card for a new fob.

Finance & Administration Director Christine Senese will soon be retiring:

Chris Senese, Director of Finance and Administration, has announced plans to retire at the end of February. Since April of 2009, she has worked to ensure we have clean audits, balanced budgets, and healthy financial reserves. Beyond fiscal responsibility, Chris never fails to set an example as a kind and thoughtful human being who has made us all better for having knowing her. Chris, you will be truly missed. A search is currently on to find Cedar Lane’s next Director of Finance and Administration. If you know someone who is interested in the position, please direct them to www.cedar-lane.org to apply.

Borrow an iPad Tablet:

With Cares Act funding, Cedar Lane has purchased four iPad tablets for residents to use. Now it’s easy and effortless to enjoy video visits with family and friends or participate in telehealth appointments with your doctor. Each iPad offers Zoom, FaceTime and other exciting apps. The iPads are available 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (weekends on a case-by-case basis.) Appointments must be made in advance by calling the Front Desk and asking for Kirk Turner or Crystal King in Service Coordination. They will get you all set up to use the iPad in the Activity Room.

Thanks to Mike’s Bikes for sponsoring yesterday’s meal

Please join me in thanking Mike Schwartz and Brigid Kenney for coordinating yesterday’s dinner donation for Cedar Lane residents. In addition to being owner of Mike’s Bikes in Great Mills, Mike Schwartz is the founder of Mike’s Food Fund, which has supported the community since 1983. The boxed meal of baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese and a roll was prepared by Clinton Robinson of Flavaz Catering & Food Services in Lexington Park. Thanks to you all for thinking of us at Cedar Lane.

Friends of Cedar Lane will sponsor another free catered dinner for residents in February

Plans are underway for another boxed dinner, courtesy of Friends of Cedar Lane. We will share all the delicious details with you soon.

Join a Storytelling Broadcast on February 2

The Maryland Department of Aging is pleased to announce the launch of Share Your Life Stories, an initiative designed to address the issue of social isolation many older adults are experiencing as a result of COVID-19. Share Your Life Stories is designed to give older adults throughout the state a chance to engage and connect with others in a safe and creative environment. To watch and listen to the first Storytelling Broadcast, register online at bit.ly/storybroadcastregister or call (301) 916-6328 ext #2.

Thanks for taking the time to read this update and for being an engaged member of our community. Best wishes for the weekend. I hope to see most of you (at a safe social distance) at the vaccine clinic on Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles, President & CEO

Beverly Stickles, President & CEO, Announces Retirement from Cedar Lane

Dear residents, staff and friends,

After more than 16 years of service to Cedar Lane, I am announcing my forthcoming retirement. I am also very pleased to announce Cedar Lane’s Board of Directors has named Mr. Eric Golden as my successor.

While there is never a perfect time for this type of transition, members of the Board and I have sincere confidence in Mr. Golden’s abilities and qualifications to assume the role of President & CEO of Cedar Lane.

Mr. Golden is an enthusiastic leader with more than a decade of experience in the operations, program design and fiscal management of senior living communities like ours. He has held executive roles at Towne Village Retirement Community in Vestavia, Alabama, Healthcare Services Group in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and Mount Royal Towers Retirement Community and Health Center in Homewood, Alabama. He is deeply mindful of resident concerns, and places a strong personal emphasis on providing the best possible experience to the residents he serves.

Mr. Golden will begin his new role with Cedar Lane on February 22, 2021. I intend to remain on campus and work closely with him through a sufficient transition period to ensure he is fully integrated and our organization is well positioned for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Cedar Lane is an amazing place. Outside of my family and closest friends, this community has been what matters most to me. Retiring from a community like this is an emotional rollercoaster, but I take great comfort in knowing that Cedar Lane’s next leader shares my passion for serving seniors.

Please join me in giving Mr. Golden a warm welcome when he arrives next month.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles, President & CEO

Community Update – January 15, 2021

A colorful graphic of the word " update ".

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

This week was a big one for Cedar Lane. On Monday at 11 a.m., we learned the St. Mary’s County Health Department could make COVID-19 vaccines available to our community members in just 24 hours’ time. While this was not part of the original plan, it was an important opportunity we simply could not miss.

After a mad scramble to register residents, schedule time slots, and set up for the onsite clinic, I am proud to report that 151 residents, employees and caregivers received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Thank you all for your cooperation with this momentous undertaking.

Important reminder:

COVID-19 vaccines require two doses for full protection. We cannot consider ourselves protected until a week or two after we have received the second dose. It is still imperative to wear your mask, wash your hands frequently, and social distance from everyone outside your household.

 COVID-19 update:

Rates of new COVID-19 cases in St. Mary’s County soared to an all-time high as of January 3, 2021. Every trip to the grocery store or gas station carries a risk of community transmission. This week we learned that a member of our extended community (not a resident or a Cedar Lane employee) tested positive for COVID-19. This individual is quarantining off campus. We also have two residents in self-isolation on campus due to potential exposure. If you think you have symptoms of COVID-19, please quarantine at home and contact your healthcare provider about testing.

Second COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic at Cedar Lane:

Our second vaccination clinic will take place during the first week in February. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

  • We will be required to re-register everyone receiving vaccines.
  • Residents or staff members who were not vaccinated at the first clinic can get their first dose on this clinic date.
  • It is very important that you keep the Vaccination Record Card that you received in a safe place and bring it with you to the next clinic.
  • Wear clothing that allows your upper arm to be easily exposed, like a short-sleeve or sleeveless shirt.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 18

Cedar Lane offices will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2021 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

  • The Department of Aging & Human Services will also be closed that day. DOAHS meal delivery that regularly takes place on Monday will take place on Tuesday, January 19 instead.
  • The St. Mary’s Transit System and ADA will operate on a normal schedule. However, the statewide Special Transportation Assistance Program will not operate on January 18.

Reserve Your Free Meal from Mike’s Bikes – Thursday, January 28

The thoughtful people who run Mike’s Bikes in Lexington Park would like to treat Cedar Lane residents to a free meal on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The meal will be delivered door-to-door by staff starting at 1 p.m. It will feature baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese and a roll. To reserve your meal, call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal.

Monthly Free Fresh Produce Program to Begin Late February

Brenda DiCarlo and her Snack Pack team from the Southern Maryland Food Bank are starting a produce delivery program for Cedar Lane residents. Each month, late February through June, they will deliver approximately six pieces of fresh produce to every resident who wishes to receive it. A survey is attached to this update (for residents only). If you are interested in receiving a monthly produce delivery, please fill out the survey and drop it off with the receptionist at the Front Desk no later than January 30, 2021. If you do not return the survey, you will not receive the produce. If you have questions, call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal.

Farewell to Wanda Fenwick

I want to share with you that Wanda has resigned her position as my executive administrative assistant. I will miss her positive, “can do” attitude. Please join me in sending her positive thoughts and wishing her the absolute best in 2021.

I wish you all safe and happy holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

Cedar Lane Announces Second Positive Case of COVID-19

December 28, 2020

Dear Members of the Cedar Lane Community,

Today we learned a second community member has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual will self-isolate for 10 days, and follow future directives as deemed necessary by his/her healthcare provider.

Respect patient privacy:

Privacy rules prohibit us from sharing any identifying information about this community member. Please respect this individual’s privacy even if you believe you know who it is.

Contact tracing:

Contact tracing is being conducted by the St. Mary’s County Health Department to identify individuals with whom this individual has had close contact. Close contact is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being within 6 feet of someone with COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes. If you are not contacted, you are not deemed to be at increased risk of exposure.

Monitor for symptoms:

If you develop a fever and symptoms, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your healthcare provider immediately for medical advice.

Protect yourself:

The virus is present within our community and more confirmed cases could be in our future. Staying home as much as you can, wearing a mask (properly so that it covers your nose and mouth) when you do go out, following proper handwashing hygiene and maintaining a safe social distance is critical to our community’s response. Please continue to take these steps to keep yourself and those around you safe.

Best regards,

Community Member Tests Positive for COVID-19

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

Cedar Lane learned today that a member of our community has tested positive for COVID-19. The affected individual is currently in quarantine and we are working with the Health Department on contact tracing.

If you are identified as someone who has had contact with this individual, you will be notified by me, or a member of the Health Department. Those notified of potential exposure will be directed to quarantine for 14 days and are expected to follow this directive. The Sheriff’s Office will help us monitor this situation as needed.

We continue to make resident and staff safety our top priority. Common spaces are being cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. We encourage all residents, staff members and caregivers to monitor for any sign of potential illness. People with COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

Remember to wear a mask, wash your hands, keep a safe distance and follow the Governor’s orders regarding holiday gatherings. We cannot let our guard down. Thank you in advance for your diligence in helping us mitigate COVID-19 in our community.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles
