Community Update – December 18, 2020

A happy holiday message with snow falling behind it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

We made it to the end of a very challenging year! This holiday season, I hope we can all choose to focus on the positive. Tops on my list is the fact that we still have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane. Our community is truly one of the most caring, creative, resourceful, and resilient around. For that, I am grateful. Here are this week’s news updates:

Ugly Holiday Sweater Day – Monday, December 21

It’s time to rock the reindeer and bring on the jingle bells. We hope you join us in wearing your craziest holiday sweater with pride on Monday. Just for fun!

Holiday Door Decorating Contest – Monday, December 21

We see that many of you have decked the halls in anticipation of the season and in preparation of Cedar Lane’s door decorating contest. Our judges will make the rounds on Monday to see what you have created and choose winners for the first, second and third prizes. Please note: decorations that do not adhere to the contest guidelines will not be considered for a prize.

Holiday Meal from Friends of Cedar Lane – Tuesday, December 22

Unless you have opted out, please make plans to be home on Tuesday starting at

3 p.m. to receive your holiday meal, compliments of Friends of Cedar Lane. The dinner, which features turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, a roll with butter and a brownie, was made by Caney Creek Catering. Special thanks to resident Ben Bolinger for working with the caterer to make this meal possible.

 Holiday Drive-By Parade – Wednesday, December 23

The students of Leonardtown High School are bringing a mini car parade to Cedar Lane at noon on Wednesday. Watch and wave as they circle our campus a few times, sharing holiday greetings and joy. It’s all the spirit of the season — at a safe social distance!

 What happened to Channel 9?

We have learned that customers across the country have lost TV stations due to a dispute between AT&T (which owns DirecTV) and broadcaster TEGNA. The communications company and the broadcaster have failed to reach a new agreement, resulting in the loss of CBS Channel 9 here at Cedar Lane. AT&T has posted on their website that they appreciate your patience while they work this matter out with TEGNA.

 What happened to Channel 8?

Channel 8 went dark on Thursday evening. We can confirm that it is not a problem with our equipment. We don’t yet have clarification from DirecTV on what the issue with Channel 8 is, and will keep you apprised of what we do learn.

 Door Lock Replacement

A contract has been signed and we anticipate the new door locks to be installed in February.

Mourning the Loss of Eddie Bailey

I was saddened to learn that Eddie Bailey passed away on December 15, 2020. Mr. Bailey was a former St. Mary’s County Commissioner and founder of Olde Breton Inn and Bailey’s Catering. Over the years, he has been a real friend of Cedar Lane, making monetary donations and supplying all the ice cream for our ice cream socials. He even donated use of Olde Breton Inn as venue space for the Mardi Gras Gala to benefit Cedar Lane. He was a pillar of the community and will be missed.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information

We have learned that residents and staff of Cedar Lane are included in group 1B on Maryland’s prioritization list. This means we will not be included in the first phase of vaccinations, which has already begun and includes hospitals, first responders and long-term care residents and staff. We are in the process of developing a COVID-19 Vaccination Plan, including a list of frequently asked questions and answers provided by the CDC. When the vaccine is made available to us, it will not be mandatory for you to take the vaccine and there is no fee to you. Service Coordinators will assist residents in completing the consent form and copying insurance information. We will do our absolute best to assist you in making an educated decision. It is your choice but I can tell you that I plan to take the vaccine. I will be first to volunteer to get the shot. I hope you will consider taking it too. This could be the dose of hope we all need.

Kenny Shorter promoted to Maintenance Technician II

I’m very pleased to announce that Kenny Shorter has been promoted to Maintenance Technician II. For the past two years, Kenny has been a huge asset to the maintenance team, providing exceptional knowhow and customer service. Please join me in congratulating him and wishing him the best in his new role.

I wish you and your loved ones a holiday season filled with happiness and good health as we look forward to brighter days in 2021. New year? Yes please!

Community Update – December 4, 2020

A yellow post it note with the words community update written on it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

Happy December, everyone. We have several news items to share within our biweekly update. Despite rising cases throughout the country and high positivity rates in St. Mary’s County, we have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane.

COVID-19 Vaccine

We’ve all been hearing a lot about a vaccine, and you probably have some questions. A COVID-19 vaccine was approved for widespread public use in the United Kingdom this week. While the United States has not authorized a COVID-19 vaccine yet, experts believe preliminary supplies will be available before the end of this month. Vaccine supplies will be limited at first. In a proactive measure, I have registered Cedar Lane as a congregate senior living community with the Centers for Disease Control, so that our residents and staff members will be included on the priority distribution list. The vaccine will be offered to our community members through an on-campus clinic administered by Omnicare®, a CVS Health® Company. I am scheduled to participate in an information session on December 7 to learn more about the process. Receiving a COVID-19 vaccine will not be mandatory for Cedar Lane residents, but it is highly encouraged. Stopping this deadly pandemic requires all the tools we have available. The goal of Operation Warp Speed is to deliver safe vaccines that work, but they will only work if you are vaccinated.

Door Lock Project

As you may recall, Cedar Lane’s lock replacement project was slated to begin back in October. Due to some issues we encountered with the original vendor proposal, we had to bid the project out twice to comply with our purchasing policies and HUD guidelines. Rebidding the job delayed the process. We have now selected the final bid. A representative from the chosen company will be on site next week to do a pre-installation walkthrough, and the contract should be signed shortly after. I apologize for the delay and promise to keep you posted as the replacement project moves forward.

Apartment Inspections

Our maintenance team has completed visual inspections of all 195 apartments at Cedar Lane. Identified issues have been noted and addressed. If you are experiencing a maintenance issue in your apartment, please call the Front Desk at 301-475-8966 and have the receptionist put in an official work order.

Announcing Ray Shauver’s Retirement

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you news that Ray Shauver, Maintenance Technician II, has retired from Cedar Lane after four years of service. Ray was skilled at everything from general repairs and preventive maintenance to basic electrical, plumbing, appliance, HVAC and carpentry work. He could often be spotted in the halls covered in dust or paint from his latest project. While we are sad to see Ray go, we wish him all the best for the future.

Unclaimed SMECO Capital Credit Refunds

SMECO has published a book with a list of former customers who have earned but have not claimed a capital credit refund or other money from SMECO. The book is in the library. Stop by and see if your name is listed. You may discover some found money!

Did You Know?

Both Cedar Lane Senior Living Community and Friends of Cedar Lane are non-profit organizations that have been granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service for providing a public benefit.

Deducting Charitable Contributions Made in 2020

Previously, charitable contributions could only be deducted if taxpayers itemized their deductions. Through the CARES Act, those who do not itemize can still take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying organizations in 2020. So whether you are supporting a food bank, COVID-19 pandemic aid or another cause that is personally meaningful to you (like Friends of Cedar Lane), your charitable donation can be deducted on your tax return.

What Friends of Cedar Lane Does with Donations

In 2019, Friends of Cedar Lane invested more than $50,000 to fund resident grants, the farmer’s market program, the Fall Festival, tenant holiday party, ice cream socials, donut socials, celebratory dinners and facility upgrades. This year, contributions to Friends of Cedar Lane made it possible to treat residents to individual meals from Rita B’s Catering, Chaptico Market, Kevin’s Corner Café and Cracker Barrel. Donations to Friends of Cedar Lane can be made in honor of a special person or event or in memory of a loved one. For more information, visit our website at cedar-lane.org and click the “Make a Donation” button.

New Residents Move in Saturday, December 5 and Monday, December 7

Movers/family members will be on property to assist new neighbors moving in on the following days:  Saturday, December 5 on the first floor of the Church Building beginning at 11:00 a.m., and Monday, December 7 on the third floor of the Burch Building beginning at 9:00 a.m. To avoid any potential spread of COVID-19, please practice social distancing to the best of your abilities. Cedar Lane’s standard precautionary measures will be followed, and the new residents will quarantine for 14 days.

 Holiday Meal Ideas Wanted

We are starting to plan a holiday meal, which will be safely delivered door-to-door. We want to hear from you. What would you like to see on the menu? What would bring some joy into this unusual holiday season? If you have ideas, please call the Front Desk and ask to speak with Jen. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Ugly Holiday Sweater Day – Monday, December 21

Let’s get into the holiday spirit! On December 21, residents and staff are encouraged to put on your boldest, brightest, ugliest holiday sweaters. You know — the ones you would be too embarrassed to wear in public. Personally, I don’t think there is any such thing as an ugly sweater. This is your chance to prove me wrong!

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

P.S. Staff members are delivering meals multiple times a week and we want to keep everyone as safe as we possibly can. Please remember to wear a mask when answering your door. If you need a new mask, see the Front Desk. Thanks!

Community Update – November 20

A tree with the words community update in front of it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

How do you find gratitude in a year like 2020? Our day-to-day routines were upended, the future became uncertain and our social interactions became risky. This year has taken a toll, but there is always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS a reason to be thankful.

I am thankful for the many people in our community who are acting responsibly to safeguard their health and the health of their neighbors during this challenging time. What are you grateful for this year? Family and friends (even if they are socially distant)? Laughter? Delicious food? A beloved pet? Music? A good book? Your favorite movie? Little acts of kindness? Memories of a special someone? Sometimes, focusing on just one blessing is all we need to get us through another day of 2020. Here are this week’s news items.

Resident in Quarantine Tests Negative for COVID-19

As we shared on Tuesday, November 17, a Cedar Lane resident who had been exposed to a COVID-positive service provider was in quarantine while awaiting test results. We are happy to report that those test results are negative. The resident will remain in self-quarantine through November 28 to ensure no symptoms appear.

Thanksgiving Meal sponsored by Friends of Cedar Lane – November 24

A complimentary Thanksgiving meal will be delivered door-to-door beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24. Everyone who has not opted out will be receiving the Cracker Barrel meal. We ask that you be home at this time and wear a face mask when answering the door. If you won’t be home, please call the Front Desk and let us know so we can remove you from the list of deliveries. We are skipping the plastic utensils this time in an effort to reduce environmental impact.

Health Department Recommendations for Thanksgiving with Family

Local health experts have issued guidance to keep you and your family safe when planning Thanksgiving dinner. According to the St. Mary’s County Health Department, members of vulnerable populations who reside in congregate settings, who choose to visit individuals outside of their immediate household for the Thanksgiving holiday, are recommended to quarantine for 14 days and to have a COVID-19 test done on day 5 or 6.  If the COVID-19 test comes back negative, the quarantine can end. Staff are also advised to limit their celebrations to the people in their own households. I personally will not be getting together with extended family this Thanksgiving. Just like you, we are doing our best to keep this community safe.

Get Connected. Get Help.™

The ongoing pandemic has significantly impacted the mental health of many in our state. If you or a loved one is struggling, call 211 or text your zip code to 898-211. Assistance is available 24/7 and in over 180 languages.

Maintenance Concerns and Extermination Update

To report a facilities issue in your apartment or in any common space, call the Front Desk and ask the receptionist to submit an official work order. If you would like an update on your work order or the issue is not resolved, please contact our Facilities Director Calvin Boozer. Recently, two residential zones were professionally treated for bed bugs. A post-treatment visual inspection by a certified inspector will take place on Monday. Mocha, the bed bug-sniffing canine, will perform a follow-up inspection in two weeks. Bed bugs are a growing problem across the country. If you suspect a bed bug issue in your apartment, it is important for you to report it immediately to the Front Desk. We will inspect your apartment and arrange for eradication treatment as necessary, at no cost to you.

  • December 3 – Free creamy garlic chicken pasta meal for residents. Your favorite people from the Southern Maryland Food Bank are heading back to Cedar Lane with a delicious pasta meal, complete with a roll, fruit and dessert. RSVP is required by November 29.  With the stories on the news these days, looking for bright spots can be a challenge. I am sure you join me in hoping the end of the year brings news for our gratitude list. I wish you all a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

Cedar Lane Senior Living Community

Community Update – November 17

Dear Residents, Families and Friends,

Cedar Lane Senior Living Community just learned that a member of our extended community has tested positive for COVID-19. This person is not a resident or staff member, but a service provider hired by one of our residents. The service provider is receiving necessary treatment while isolating at home, per St. Mary’s County Health Department and CDC guidelines. The resident who employed the service provider is also isolating at home, pending the results of a COVID-19 test.

Risk of Exposure:

We realize a case of COVID-19 within our extended community creates a heightened sense of worry and concern. Due to the nature of this person’s visits to Cedar Lane, we believe the risk of exposure to Cedar Lane’s residents, staff and visitors is no greater than the risk of contracting the virus in the general community.

Maryland is in the Red Zone:

Not only is COVID-19 not going away, it is becoming more widespread. In his news briefing today, Governor Hogan reported that COVID-19 has killed more Marylanders than car accidents, gun violence and flu combined. In the past seven days, St. Mary’s County saw 157 new cases — the highest number yet — and a positivity rate of 7.51%.

Cedar Lane Visitation Restrictions Return:

In response to these numbers, I am revising the Cedar Lane visitation policy. Effective Thursday, November 19, 2020, only individuals providing vital support to residents will be allowed admittance to Cedar Lane. If you have questions or wish to discuss your specific needs, please contact Calvin Boozer.

With Rampant Community Spread, You Should Assume EVERYONE is Infected:

Social gatherings and events with non-household members, including smaller events with family and/or friends, are among the most common activities contributing to the spread of COVID-19.  This data indicates a strong community spread. Dr. Brewster, St. Mary’s County Health Officer, recommends that we limit interactions with individuals outside our household. With the holidays approaching, I know many of you want to spend time with family and friends, however I caution you to consider the risks. The more people you are exposed to, the greater your risk of becoming infected.

 You Are the Gatekeeper:

We are relying on you to make good decisions. You are responsible for yourself and the support personnel that you bring into Cedar Lane, whether they are family members or professional service providers. Insist that they go directly to your apartment, wash their hands upon entering your apartment, wear a mask at all times, and keep a safe distance of six feet or more from you and your neighbors unless they are administering personal care.

Keep an Eye on Your Own Health:

This virus can be deadly for the senior population and for those with underlying conditions. Routinely self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 including coughing, shortness of breath, fever, chills and shaking, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, diarrhea and vomiting. If you are experiencing these symptoms, stay home and away from others, and call your personal healthcare provider to discuss COVID-19 testing. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, DO NOT leave your apartment except to get tested or seek medical care.  Anyone who is experiencing a medical emergency should call 9-1-1.

All of this news reinforces the critical need to continue practicing infection prevention measures, including the use of face coverings, handwashing and social distancing. I am sure you join me in hoping that this service provider experiences a full recovery from this devastating illness.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

President & CEO

Community Update – November 6

A green and white logo for the living company.
A red, orange and green circle with the word update in it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

Happy November! This season of gratitude reminds us to be thankful for the positive things happening in our lives. Here is a roundup of news from Cedar Lane:

No Known Cases of COVID-19

As of today, there are still no known cases of COVID-19 within our community. (I will never grow tired of writing that sentence.) However, we cannot afford to let our guard down. As Governor Hogan said in yesterday’s press conference, the warning lights are flashing. “Just wear the damn mask.” Maryland’s positivity rate is climbing. Please continue to do your part to slow the spread by wearing a mask, social distancing, washing your hands or using the provided sanitizer every time you enter the building.

Thanksgiving Feast Delivered Free to Your Door November 24

Friends of Cedar Lane will treat all residents to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with door-to-door deliveries starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24. The menu will feature home-style turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, a dinner roll and pumpkin pie from Cracker Barrel. They know comfort food! If you DO NOT wish to receive the meal, call the front desk at 301.475.8966 and ask for Wanda by Thursday, November 12, 2020.

Grand Prize Raffle Winner Donates $10,000 Prize Back to Cedar Lane

When Pat McGowan of Florida bought his ticket for The Big Raffle, he had no idea he would soon win the $10,000 Grand Prize. Instead of using the money to pay bills, buy a luxury item or take a dream trip, he chose to donate the entire prize amount back to Friends of Cedar Lane. He donated the money in honor of his mother-in-law Mary McLaughlin, who once lived here. For the first time in the raffle’s history, all 400 tickets were sold. The event raised a record-setting $38,000 for the residents of Cedar Lane.

Congratulations to Three Annual Meeting Prize Winners

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Annual Meeting conference call last week. We want to congratulate Frances Quade, Ben Bolinger and Marjorie Beaudwin, who were randomly chosen from all participants to win money off November’s rent.

Please refrain from bringing non-confidential items like newspapers and magazines, which can be recycled at any convenience center.

Your Community Cares about You

Since our last update, Cedar Lane was “booed” with Halloween goodie bags from the 8th graders at Father Andrew White School, Girl Scout Troop 1166 dropped off “potsativity” plants for residents, the Town of Leonardtown donated fabric face masks, and Southern Maryland Food Bank treated all interested residents to a free shepherd’s pie dinner. We are so grateful for the continued outpouring of kindness and support from the community.

Community Update – October 23, 2020

A blue arrow with the word " update " on it.

Dear Cedar Lane residents, families & friends,

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with several residents over the past two weeks, and what I’m hearing is that while they look forward to the time when life at Cedar Lane can return to what it was before March, they are appreciative of the steps we are taking to keep everyone as safe as possible.

We still have no known cases of COVID-19 on our campus. We will continue to take a conservative approach to loosening restrictions and allowing services to reopen while following the guidance of local and state health authorities, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Three W’s to ward off COVID-19: wearing a mask, washing your hands, and watching your distance.

A few residents have grown very impatient with the mask mandate. We get it – we are all weary of the need for face coverings. Now is not the time to let down our guard. St. Mary’s County is experiencing multiple outbreaks, several of which originated at small family gatherings. Cedar Lane is home to people who are medically vulnerable. If you won’t comply with Maryland’s mask order for yourself, please do it to make your neighbors feel more secure. Think about the repercussions of not wearing a mask. Not only are you creating more work for staff who have to clean and sanitize behind you, but imagine how you might feel if you are an asymptomatic carrier who passes the virus off to others. Isn’t it worth the minor inconvenience of a mask to ensure the wellbeing of your neighbors?

The Big Raffle Concluded Today

Today marked the grand prize drawing in The Big Raffle, a six-week fundraiser hosted by Friends of Cedar Lane. For the first year in the Raffle’s history, we sold all 400 tickets and raised approximately $27,000 for the residents of Cedar Lane. Pat M. of Florida was the lucky grand prizewinner of today’s $10,000 grand prize drawing. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket and supported our fundraiser.

Cedar Lane’s Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, October 26 at 10 a.m.

All residents, employees and directors are considered members of our organization and are encouraged to participate. Due to ongoing public health issues arising from COVID-19, the Annual Meeting will be conducted by conference call this year. We hope you will call in and listen to the formal proceedings of the Annual Meeting, followed by a brief business update of the organization and election of board members who will take office January 1, 2021. Annual meeting materials, including biographies of the candidates, were distributed to all residents on Thursday. At the end of the meeting, three participating residents will be randomly chosen to win $50, $75 or $100 off rent. If you plan on calling in, please let us know in advance by calling the Front Desk and asking for Wanda.

 CDC Eviction Moratorium

To prevent the further spread of COVID-19, the CDC has issued an order that puts a temporary halt to residential evictions of covered persons for nonpayment of rent now through December 31, 2020. In order to be eligible for the order’s protections, renters must provide an official declaration under penalty of perjury to their housing provider indicating the following:

  • You have used best efforts to obtain rental assistance
  • You expect to earn no more than $99,000 (no more than $198,000 when filing jointly), you were not required to report income in 2019 to the IRS; or your received a stimulus check pursuant to the CARES Act
  • You are unable to pay your full rent due to a number of factors that remain unconnected to COVID-19
  • You are using best efforts to make timely partial payments
  • Eviction would likely render you homeless or force you to move into and live in close quarters in a new congregate or shared living setting because you have no other available housing options.

The CDC moratorium does not mean you don’t have to pay rent, and you may be subject to late fees when the eviction protection ends. Residents behind in their rent should be trying to work out a payment plan. If you need a sample of an official declaration, or other guidance regarding this eviction moratorium, please call the Front Desk and ask for Christine Senese.

Farewell to Kathy Jaros

Last but certainly not least, Cedar Lane will soon be bidding a fond farewell to longtime employee Kathy Jaros, who is retiring after dedicating a total of 28 years to serving the residents of Cedar Lane. A feature article about Kathy is attached to this update. It has been an absolute joy to have Kathy as part of our team and she will be greatly missed.

We send you every best wish for the future, Kathy!

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

President & CEO

Cedar Lane Senior Living Community

A woman in green shirt sitting down with her arms crossed.

It is with sincere and heartfelt appreciation for her hard work and dedication that we say goodbye to Kathy Jaros, who is retiring from Cedar Lane after 28 years of service.

Kathy started her Cedar Lane career as a nursing assistant in the clinic, performing patient care tasks, housekeeping and laundry functions and coordinating community services for residents.

“Things have changed a lot,” Kathy said wistfully. “Back then we didn’t use computers. All of our resident information was hand-written on Rolodex cards. We used to take turns sitting in a tiny office that is now the electrical room to monitor the alarm board. If someone pulled an emergency cord, the board would light up and play a loud alert sound. We would have to turn it off manually and go check on the resident.”

In December of 2000, Kathy was invited to work the Front Desk, and she has remained a part of the Front Desk team for the past 20 years. Kathy has fond memories of the Cedar Lane restaurant, which would draw the local doctors, members of the Sheriff’s Office and other professionals at lunchtime. “Everyone came here to eat. Even actress Helen Hayes ate in the Dining Room while she was here visiting a resident.” That same resident was also visited by Nancy Sinatra, according to Kathy.

Some of Kathy’s strongest memories involve a former boss who wore the signature scent of Chanel #5. “She always dressed to a tee and always wore Chanel #5 perfume. When you smelled it, you knew she was coming,” Kathy remembers. Other favorite memories include all the Fall Festival events at Cedar Lane, and the recent weekly produce markets hosted by Historic Sotterley.

“Those events were a good time for everyone. The Friends of Cedar Lane really do good work when it comes to bringing people together,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give to any new staff members Kathy said, “The need to be flexible. Things are always changing so you need to be ready for changes.”

What will she miss the most about Cedar Lane? “The people. We’ve got a lot of good people here.”

So what is next on the horizon for Kathy? “Well my sister Judy thinks I’m going to spend all my time watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel. I told her I’ve already been doing that since July!” Kathy went on to say she is going to take until the end of the year to relax, and catch up with family members. After that, she is ready for new adventures and new possibilities.

November 1 will be Kathy’s last day at the Front Desk. “I know I will be busting up crying, so I don’t want anyone to make a big deal out of it,” she said. “I’ve cried at goodbye parties for other people, so I can’t imagine what my last day is going to be like for me.”

Enjoy your retirement, Kathy. You will forever be a part of Cedar Lane’s story.

Community Update – October 9, 2020

A colorful graphic of the word " update ".

Community Update: October 9, 2020

Dear Cedar Lane residents, family & friends,

The arrival of fall has always felt like a time of new beginnings – a fresh start. There are plenty of things to be optimistic about, including the fact that Cedar Lane remains free of any known cases of COVID-19. Here are the other news items for this week:

Limited Visitation Resumes Monday, October 12

We know that in-person visits with loved ones is one of the most anticipated activities in our reopening plan. Cedar Lane will begin safely welcoming visitors back on campus on a limited basis starting Monday, October 12, 2020. We are starting by welcoming back the family members and friends of residents. You will notice that we are using a new screening form that asks for more detailed information that will be important in the event of contact tracing.

Residents are asked to limit visitors to two at a time. Visitors must agree to enter through the front door only, pass the temperature check and health screening at the Front Desk, use the hand sanitizer, wear masks, social distance, and avoid congregating in common areas. Preventative measures remain in place, including frequent sanitization of high-touch areas.

New residents must still self-quarantine for 14 days before receiving visitors. You will find a complete rundown of our visitor guidelines attached to this update. Visitation can only continue if Cedar Lane remains free of COVID-19 cases. It is important that every resident and family member abide by the guidelines to limit potential spread.

Further Reopening News

Given the population we serve, we are taking a cautious and measured approach to reopening. Our first step is welcoming back family members and friends. When that step is proven successful, and we feel ready to move forward, we will announce plans for bringing back delivery personnel, agency representatives, the podiatrist, hair salon staff and activities. Please be patient as we move through the reopening process thoughtfully, to ensure that our efforts are sustainable and safe.

Columbus Day County Closings

Cedar Lane offices will be open on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12. However many county offices and operations will be closed or have reduced hours due to the holiday.

  • COVID-19 testing at 21580 Peabody Street, Leonardtown will be closed for the holiday. Appointment-free, walk-up COVID-19 testing at SMCHD’s Harm Reduction Program office in Lexington Park will operate from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Both testing sites will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Cedar Lane’s Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, October 26 at 10 a.m.

All residents, employees and directors are considered members of our organization and are invited to participate. Due to ongoing public health issues arising from COVID-19, the Annual Meeting will be conducted by conference call this year. We hope you will call in and listen to the formal proceedings of the Annual Meeting, followed by a brief business update of the organization and election of board members who will take office January 1, 2021. Annual meeting materials, including biographies of the candidates, will be distributed prior to the Annual Meeting. At the end of the meeting, three participating residents will be randomly chosen to win $50, $75 or $100 off rent. Residents with limited minute phone plans are encouraged to call from a landline if possible.

Share Food Network

The SHARE Food Network is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to offering healthy, nutritious groceries at a roughly 50 percent discount over grocery store prices. October food orders are due by October 19. If you would like to learn more, see channel 2 on your TV or call the Front Desk and ask for Crystal. Delivery can be arranged!

 Stimulus Checks

November 21 is the last day to claim your stimulus payment. Most eligible U.S. taxpayers have automatically received their Economic Impact Payment. Some may need to provide their information by November 21 if they have not received their payment yet. If you need assistance, please call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal.

Need a Ride to the Polls?

The Service Coordinators have found a local organization that may be able to provide residents free rides to the polls for Early Voting and Election Day voting. We need to provide an estimate of the number of residents who would be interested in using this service. Please call the Front Desk and ask for Crystal or Kirk if you are interested.

Stay well and have a safe weekend!

Sincerely,

Community Update: September 25, 2020

Dear Cedar Lane residents, family & friends,

Happy fall. We wanted to provide you with an update on our community as we continue to navigate these uncertain times.

COVID-19 Update

To date, we have had no known COVID-19 cases at Cedar Lane. This is no small feat and I am grateful for the hard work, dedication and commitment on the part of residents, their families and staff members to safeguard our community.

MOR in the Burch Building

On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, auditors will be on property to perform a Management and Occupancy Review (MOR) for the Burch Building. An MOR is a comprehensive review designed to make sure Cedar lane is in full compliance with all HUD requirements. Some of you with apartments in the Burch Building may have received a resident satisfaction survey to complete. We will let you know how we do!

Businesses Adjacent to Our Campus

It has come to our attention that a few Cedar Lane residents are inappropriately using the Medical Arts Center parking lot adjacent to our campus for parking and smoking. As posted signs indicate, parking at the Medical Arts Building is reserved for clients only. As a MedStar Health facility, the Medical Arts Building is a smoke-free campus, with no smoking permitted anywhere on their grounds. I am asking you to please be good neighbors and respect the businesses next door. We don’t want to see anyone towed or fined for violating the requests and rights of our neighbors.

Are You Registered to Vote?

There are 38 days left until Election Day. I hope you are excited to make your voice heard. If you would like assistance with registering to vote, call the front desk and ask for Service Coordinators Crystal King or Kirk Turner. Unsure if you are registered or not? We can check for you! This year, we have our choice of voting by mail, voting early in person, or voting on Election Day. Your vote counts and so do you!

End of Year Project from Friends of Cedar Lane

The Friends of Cedar Lane Board members are in discussions about an end-of-year project to benefit residents. Past projects have included the refurbishment of the hair salon, outfitting the fitness center, a new audio/visual system, and the new patio area next to the dining room. If you have an idea for this year’s project, I would love to hear it. Please keep in mind, we can’t plan a group outing or activity at this time due to social distancing. But if you have an idea for a facility upgrade that you would enjoy, or a new technology that would make your life easier, please call the front desk and ask for Wanda Fenwick, who will collect all ideas and forward them to me for consideration.

Stay well and enjoy the cooler weather!

Beverly Stickles

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

Cedar Lane Misnamed in Southern Maryland News story

In an article published September 18, 2020, by Southern Maryland News, Cedar Lane Senior Living Community was wrongly named as a long-term care facility experiencing an active outbreak of COVID-19.

The facts are that Cedar Lane is not a long-term care facility and is not experiencing an active outbreak of COVID-19. In fact, management is aware of no known cases in our community since the health crisis began.

Southern Maryland News has since corrected the error in the online version of the story and will run a correction in next week’s paper. We want to assure our residents and their family members that the Cedar Lane community is not now experiencing — nor has it experienced — a COVID-19 outbreak. We believe transparency is critical in maintaining the valued trust of senior living residents, families, employees, and the public.
