Leonardtown, Maryland — February 25, 2026 — Cedar Lane Senior Living Community has been selected to receive $1.5 Million in federal funding through the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill, secured by U.S. Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen.

The funding will support the development of Evergreen, a new 70-unit affordable senior housing community developed through Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC). Scheduled to open in 2028, Evergreen will significantly expand housing options for income-eligible older adults in Southern Maryland.  

Evergreen will provide safe, modern, and energy-efficient apartment homes designed to promote dignity, independence, and quality of life for older adults. The development will help address the growing demand for affordable senior housing in St. Mary’s County and the surrounding region.

“Far too many Maryland seniors face limited options for affordable housing that supports their health and well-being. That’s why we worked to secure this $1,500,000 in federal funding to expand housing options for seniors in St. Mary’s County. This investment will help ensure more Southern Maryland seniors can continue living safely and independently in the community they call home,” said Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“I understand deeply, and personally, the challenge and the privilege of watching my parents grow older, and I believe all our seniors deserve to retire and age safely and with dignity. That’s why Senator Van Hollen and I worked to secure $1.5 million for Cedar Lane Senior Living to develop a new affordable housing community. This new community will be a safe haven and thriving community for so many of our seniors in Southern Maryland, and I look forward to seeing it come to life,” said Senator Alsobrooks.

The addition of Evergreen will:

• Create 70 new affordable housing units for income-qualified seniors
• Expand Cedar Lane’s campus and long-term capacity to serve the region
• Provide modern, accessible design that supports aging in place
• Strengthen housing stability for vulnerable older adults

“Cedar Lane has served seniors in Southern Maryland for nearly 50 years, and Green Street Housing is proud to be their development partner in bringing Evergreen to life,” said Thomas Ayd, Green Street Housing Developer. “Evergreen fills the critical gap between deeply subsidized Section 8 housing and market‑rate homes, completing a true continuum of affordable options for St. Mary’s County seniors.”

Construction of Evergreen is anticipated to begin in 2027, with completion projected in 2028.
