Community Update: September 11, 2020

Dear Cedar Lane residents, family & friends,

I hope you have found these weekly updates helpful, as we try to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation. We still have no known cases of COVID-19 to report at Cedar Lane. As news about the pandemic slows, look for this community update to come out every other week, unless there is vital and timely information to share.

When can visitors and group activities return?

I know these are the questions on everyone’s mind. Back in March, we moved quickly to safeguard our community against the novel coronavirus. Now we are waiting alongside the Department of Aging and the region’s senior centers for the end of the state of emergency and the green light that our normal activities can resume safely. As soon as we hear anything regarding the easing of restrictions, we will share the news.

County Health Telehealth Resource Guide

The pandemic may be overwhelming for some and can cause strong feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness and uncertainty. Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. The St. Mary’s County Department of Health has developed a resource guide to provide information on local tele-health support through phone or video during this pandemic. If you’re interested in receiving a copy of this guide, please call the front desk and ask for one of our service coordinators: Kirk Turner or Crystal King.

CDC issues eviction ban

On September 4, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued an order banning evictions for certain renters through December 31, 2020. The CDC is issuing the eviction moratorium to protect public health and prevent further spread of COVID-19. To be eligible for eviction protections under the order, residents must sign a declaration form and meet the requirements outlined in the order, which are also described in the declaration form. If you have questions about the eviction ban or would like to request a declaration form, please call the front desk and ask for ____________________.

Remembering 9-11-2001

Our community honors the memories of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks nineteen years ago at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. Do you remember where you were that day?

Get ready for flu season.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our free, door-to-door flu shot clinic. Between residents and staff members, 118 Cedar Lane community members are now immunized against the influenza virus, and CVS representatives will return next week to administer vaccines to a few residents we missed. You can further prepare for flu season by stocking up on tissues, hand sanitizer, hand soap and paper towels. Take a look at your medicine cabinet too. Replace anything that has expired and make sure you have pain relievers, decongestants, fever reducers, cough syrup and antihistamines. Test your thermometer batteries and clean your humidifier.

Join an advisory board

Have you ever considered putting your ideas and experience to work helping the community? The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County are looking for citizens just like you to serve on the following volunteer boards. Detailed descriptions of the various boards and membership applications are available at www.stmarysmd.com/boards/. All applications must include a resume and be submitted no later than November 13, 2020.

2020 Storms

Have you heard that the number of 2020 storms are expected to exceed the designated name list? This has only happened once before, in 2005, which had 28 named storms. Hurricane specialists will begin using letters from the Greek alphabet to name storms!

The First Big Raffle Drawing is Next Friday!

We have sold 126 tickets to date and we know several of you are in it to win it! The first cash drawing will take place on Friday, September 18 with a $100 prize. Each Friday, the cash prize grows larger and larger until we get to the $10,000 grand prize drawing on October 23. Good luck to everyone who bought a ticket. If you want a chance to win, there is still time. Call the front desk and ask for Executive Administrative Assistant Wanda Fenwick.

Furry Friends

I recently learned that September is Happy Cat Month and National Service Dog Month. So join me in giving a shout out to the fabulous felines and super service dogs who reside within our community, and the residents who love and depend on them.

Community Update – September 4, 2020

Community Update: September 4, 2020

Dear Cedar Lane residents, family & friends,

On Tuesday, Governor Hogan announced the beginning of Stage 3 of the ‘Maryland Strong: Roadmap to Recovery’. Starting 5 p.m. today, the order allows movie theaters and live entertainment venues to reopen and increases capacity from 50% to 75% at retail shops and religious services.

Does This Mean Everything is Back to Normal?

No, many restrictions are still in place. Face coverings and social distancing are still required. The Governor’s order also states that, for now at least, senior centers must remain closed.

How Will Stage Three Reopening Orders Impact Life Here at Cedar Lane?

The Governor’s order did not directly address senior living communities. Cedar Lane will continue to follow the latest guidance of county leaders and health department officials. We will keep you informed of any changes to our current policies or procedures, which for now all remain in place.

Visitor Access for Legitimate Caretakers

For every resident who is thankful for the strict precautions we implemented back in March, another wants to see those restrictions relaxed. Our goal is to strike a safe balance. We know many family members used to support residents with important tasks like housekeeping and changing linens. If a resident’s wellbeing has been compromised by visitor restrictions at Cedar Lane, please call the Front Desk at 301-475-8966 and ask to speak with one of our two Service Coordinators: Kirk or Crystal. Your situation may qualify as legitimate caretaking and your family member could be granted access.

COVID-19 Community Hotline Closing Today

As part of the Stage 3 recovery, the Covid-19 Community Hotline will close as of 5 p.m. today. Anyone with questions relating to COVID-19 may call the St. Mary’s County Health Department directly at (301) 475-4330.

 Parking Considerations

With all entry into Cedar Lane limited to the front door, parking spaces in front of the Church Building are in high demand. If you use your vehicle infrequently, please be considerate of your neighbors and park in the outer parking areas, if you are physically able to do so.

Labor Day Closings & Announcements

  • Cedar Lane’s offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7
  • Next week’s home-delivered meals from the Department of Aging & Human Services will be delivered on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
  • All St. Mary’s County administrative offices will be closed on Labor Day.
  • The St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) and the Specialized Statewide Transportation Assistance Program (SSTAP) will be closed Monday, Sept. 7. STS will operate on a regular schedule Sept. 6 and 8. SSTAP will resume its regular schedule Sept. 8.
  • All St. Mary’s County Libraries will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, 2020.

Atlantic Hurricane Season

As if 2020 hasn’t been challenging enough, September 10 marks the peak of a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season. It is not too late to be prepared. See Channel 2 for a list of items that should be in your emergency kit.

Sign Up for CodeRED Weather Warnings

The CodeRED Emergency Notification System makes calls to relay vital weather information. Sign up online at www.stmarysmd.com/emergencycodered.asp. For more information, call the Department of Emergency Services at 301-475-4200, extension 72110.

November 3 Election Day Voting Questions Answered

Can I vote by mail?

Yes. The state will mail every voter an application to request an absentee ballot, also known as a mail-in ballot. This application must be returned by October 20— either on paper or online — for you to receive an official ballot. If it is after Oct. 20 and you would like a mail-in ballot, you may show up in person at your local elections board and exchange your ballot application for a blank ballot.

Can I vote early?

Absolutely. You are encouraged to do so. Mail-in ballots may be sent back as soon as you have filled them out. If you prefer or need to vote in person, early voting centers open in every county at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, and will stay open until 8 p.m. every day through the election. Locations will be posted well in advance. You may vote at any early-voting center in your home county.

When do I need to mail or drop off my ballot?

By no later than Election Day, Nov. 3. Ballots either must be in a drop box or postmarked as of that day, which means that if you mail the ballot on Nov. 3, you must do so before that day’s mail pickup. It would be safer to mail it earlier.

How do I ensure my vote is counted?

You can visit https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/VoterSearch to track whether your ballot application has been processed and whether your application has been mailed to you — and, after you turn it in or mail it back, whether it has been accepted.

Are you registered?

Make sure that you are registered to vote well in advance of Election Day. If you would like assistance with registering to vote, please call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal.

Questions & Comments

Please feel free to reach out by e-mail or telephone. We love hearing from you and we greatly appreciate the overwhelming support from our residents, families and friends. Additionally, if there is anything you think we can be doing better, we’d love to hear that feedback too. Please call Wanda Fenwick at 301-475-8966 ext. 24 or email [email protected]

Community Update – August 28

Community Update: August 28, 2020

Dear community members:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and perseverance during these very trying times. I am proud of the ways we have risen to every challenge as a community. Here are the news updates for this week:

COVID-19 Status

We have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane Senior Living Community.

Do You Need Vital Assistance from a Family Member or Friend?

State and Health Department guidelines prohibit us from welcoming friends or family members for social visits. However, we know there are residents who relied on loved ones to provide vital health, wellness and housekeeping tasks before the pandemic. If your wellbeing has been compromised by the visitor restriction, please call the Front Desk and ask to speak with one of our two Service Coordinators: Kirk or Crystal. We want to work with you.

Severe Weather Alert: Extreme Heat Followed by Hurricane Laura

After peak heat indices of 100 to 105 degrees Thursday and Friday, Hurricane Laura will bring the potential for locally heavy rain, gusty winds, flooding and tornadoes on Saturday. Please have an emergency kit with food, water and medicines ready, and take all necessary precautions to stay safe indoors during these weather events.

Door-to-Door Flu Shots

On Wednesday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from CVS will administer a free flu vaccine to any resident who wants one. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. A registration form must be completed by September 4. Call the Front Desk and ask for Kirk or Crystal to register.

St. Mary’s County Health Department Reopens for Appointment-based Services

Beginning September 1, 2020, the St. Mary’s County Health Department will reopen select services by appointment beginning September 1, 2020. If you are in need of a birth certificate or death certificate, you may make an appointment with the Vital Records division by calling 301-475-4330. COVID-19 Testing will continue to be available without an appointment. For more information on local testing options, please call the COVID Community Hotline at 301-475-4911.

Senior Check program

Maryland is the first state in the country to start a free, opt-in, phone service to check on Maryland’s older residents, all across the state. Would you like to receive a phone call every day at a regularly scheduled time between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.? Just call 1-866-502-CHECK to enroll. This is a wonderful resource, particularly during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Thank you to Friends of Cedar Lane for Yesterday’s Dinner

I’m sure you join me in sending big thanks to Friends of Cedar Lane and all our generous supporters for treating residents to a fried chicken dinner with potato salad, coleslaw, a roll and a cookie from Chaptico Market. What did you think of this dinner? Which caterer has made the best fried chicken so far?

Welcoming Lynn Pawlowitz to the Cedar Lane Team

We are excited to announce that Lynn Pawlowitz will be joining our staff as a part-time accounts receivables specialist in the finance office.

Parking Reminder

During daytime hours, staff members and caregivers are not to use the parking spaces located at the front of Cedar Lane Senior Living Community. These spaces are reserved for residents only. For safety reasons, staff members or caregivers who arrive and leave during overnight hours may use an empty space up front if one is available.

Front Entrance Reminder

Please do not give anyone access to Cedar Lane through side or rear doors. This violates the visitation policy that was established by Cedar Lane and recommended by the Health Department. All arrivals are to take place through the Front Desk.

Apartment Inspections Continue

On behalf of the Facilities team, I want to thank those of you who have worked with us on our goal to catch up with routine apartment inspections. If we haven’t gotten to your apartment yet, we will be notifying you shortly.

Leonardtown Needs Your Input

The Town of Leonardtown was awarded a $100,000 grant by the Maryland Heritage Area Authority to purchase an authentic paddlewheel riverboat, in hopes it will bring more activity and development to Leonardtown’s waterfront. The Town Council will vote on whether to approve this project based on what they hear from the citizens of Leonardtown – and that includes you. Please take a few minutes to give them your thoughts! Call 301-475-9791.

Take a Virtual Tour of the New Leonardtown Library

If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit the new Leonardtown Library, we have a great link to share with you. Now, you can take a virtual tour right from any smartphone, personal computer or tablet. Just type this link in the search bar:

Community Update – August 21

A graph showing the number of cases in st. Mary 's county

Community Update: August 21, 2020

Dear community members:

Here is your weekly roundup of news items, health updates and facilities improvements coming your way at Cedar Lane.

In need of essentials?

With facemask and social distancing requirements, it’s not as easy as it used to be to go out for items like food and medicine. If you are in need of vital supplies, please call the Front Desk and ask for our service coordinators, Kirk or Crystal, for assistance.

COVID-19 news:

We have no known cases of COVID-19 here at Cedar Lane, but cases in our county continue to climb. At St. Mary’s County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center just down the street, 22 residents and 21 staff members have tested positive for the virus. Chesapeake Shores in Lexington Park has reported 9 cases. County Commissioner President Randy Guy shared in the County Times that he has tested positive as well. Please continue to protect yourself and your neighbors by social distancing, wearing a face mask and washing your hands frequently.

Flu Shots:

This year the St. Mary’s County Health Department is advising seniors to get the flu shot as soon as the vaccine is available. People over the age of 65 should get Fluzone High- Dose (FLUAD) because it provides better protection against flu viruses.

Door Lock Replacement Project:

Because our current lock system has become obsolete and parts can no longer be ordered, the Board of Directors has approved the purchase of a new, contactless lock system for all apartments, offices and storage areas. A vendor has been selected from the bids received and the contract has been awarded. We hope to begin the project the first week of October.

Emergency Services Launches Text-to-911 Messaging:

The St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services has launched the Text-to-911 emergency notification system. Available statewide, this service provides an additional way for residents to reach emergency services. Text-to-911 messaging may be used by those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have a speech disability. Additionally, the service can be used by people who may be in situations where it is unsafe to place a voice call or are experiencing a medical emergency and are unable to speak. To use the service, enter 911 in the “to” line of a text message, include a brief message describing your location, the emergency and type of service needed, and hit send. 911 dispatchers will respond, gather additional information as needed, and dispatch appropriate emergency responders.

St. Mary’s Quilters Donates Club Account Funds to Cedar Lane

Since the 1970s, the St. Mary’s County Quilters have gathered at Cedar Lane Senior Living Community for their weekly group quilting sessions. Throughout the decades, the Quilters have given fascinating demonstrations and presentations to residents. In December of 2019, they presented Mr. Fred Wilson, Cedar Lane’s oldest World War II veteran, with a Quilt of Valor. After 43 years, St. Mary’s County Quilters are officially disbanding. They generously decided to donate their remaining club account funds to benefit the residents of Cedar Lane, the place where they have built so many happy memories. I’m sure you join me in thanking them for their friendship now, and over the decades. They have our best wishes!

Summer Chicken Dinner #3 from Friends of Cedar Lane

Friends of Cedar Lane will treat all residents to another complimentary fried chicken dinner on Thursday, August 27, 2020. This dinner, prepared by Chaptico Market, will feature two pieces of fried chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, a roll and a cookie. Big thanks go out to resident Ben Bollinger, who contacted Chaptico Market on our behalf.
Our staff members will deliver the meal to every resident starting at 3 p.m. If you will not be here on Thursday or do not want this free meal, please opt out by calling the front desk and asking for Wanda by Tuesday August 25. You only need to call if you do not want the meal – everyone else will receive a meal automatically.

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles President & CEO

Community Update: August 14, 2020

Dear community members:

This week, St. Mary’s County reached an unfortunate milestone: 1,054 confirmed cases of COVID-19. We have been fortunate so far not to have any known cases of the virus in our community. That can change any day, at any moment. Please continue to avoid close contact with others, wear a facemask, wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, clean and disinfect often, and be alert for symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath.

No Animals at Large – a Leonardtown Law

According to the town code, it is unlawful for any person to allow his or its animal to be at large. This means that dogs are not permitted to be off-leash anywhere in town. Letting dogs run off leash on any commercial property is considered a public nuisance and is subject to fines that increase with every offense. The businesses adjacent to Cedar Lane have been cooperative and obliging neighbors, giving us permission to use their parking lots when we are staging outdoor events. Please be respectful to their businesses in return and do not let dogs off leash.

St. Mary’s County Election Office to Relocate

The St. Mary’s County Election Office will be relocating to the old Leonardtown Library at 23250 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown August 17-21. During the transition, residents with questions should call 301-475-4200, ext. 1625 and leave a voicemail. Calls will be returned within 24 hours. However, matters requiring immediate assistance may be directed to Wendy Adkins, Director for the Election Office at 301-904-8346.

Upcoming Move-ins and Move-outs at Cedar Lane

A new neighbor will be moving into the Church Building (third floor) with the assistance of professional movers or family members on Saturday, August 15, 2020. To limit any potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus, we suggest you remain in your apartment on this date between the hours of 12:00 Noon and 3:00 p.m. while the move takes place. If you can’t stay in, please practice social distancing. Your new neighbor has agreed to self-quarantine for 14-days.

A neighbor will also be moving out of the Church Building (fourth floor) with the assistance of movers or family members on Monday, August 17. If you are able to remain in your apartment between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. please do so. If you must go out, please practice social distancing.

Non-residents assisting with these moves will be required to wear a mask, complete the health screening and temperature check at the front desk, and proceed straight to the apartment where the move is taking place. We will clean and disinfect all high-touch surfaces again after their departure. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to accommodate important resident moves while safeguarding the rest of the community.

The Big Raffle is On!

Friends of Cedar Lane has launched this year’s cash raffle fundraiser, with $12,000 in cash prizes up for grabs including a $10,000 Grand Prize. Board members and staff members are selling tickets to raise money for special treats and programs here at Cedar Lane. You’re welcome to enter and win too! Tickets are $100 each. Only 400 tickets will be sold. With six cash drawings, every ticket has a 1 in 66 chance of being a winner! To purchase tickets, call the Front Desk and ask for Wanda.

Beware of Scams Related to the Coronavirus

Scammers are taking advantage of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to con people into giving up their money. Here are a few coronavirus-specific scams to look out for.

Scams offering COVID-19 vaccine, cure, air filters, testing

At this time, there is neither a vaccine nor a cure for this virus. If you receive a phone call, email, text message, or letter with claims to sell you any of these items–it’s a scam.

Fake coronavirus-related charity scams

If you are able to help financially, visit the website of the organization of your choice to make sure your money is going to the right place. And be wary if you get a call following up on a donation pledge that you don’t remember making–it could be a scam.

“Person in need†scams

Scammers could use the circumstances of the coronavirus to pose as a grandchild, relative or friend who claims to be ill, stranded in another state or foreign country, or otherwise in trouble, and ask you to send money. They may ask you to send cash by mail or buy gift cards. These scammers often beg you keep it a secret and act fast before you ask questions. Don’t panic! Take a deep breath and get the facts. Don’t send money unless you’re sure it’s the real person who contacted you. Hang up and call your grandchild or friend’s phone number to see if the story checks out. You could also call a different friend or relative to check the caller’s story.

Scams targeting your Social Security benefits

While local Social Security Administration (SSA) offices are closed to the public due to COVID-19 concerns, SSA will not suspend or decrease Social Security benefit payments or Supplemental Security Income payments due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Scammers may mislead people into believing they need to provide personal information or pay by gift card, wire transfer, internet currency, or by mailing cash to maintain regular benefit payments during this period. Any communication that says SSA will suspend or decrease your benefits due to COVID-19 is a scam, whether you receive it by letter, text, email, or phone call. Report Social Security scams to the SSA Inspector General online at oig.ssa.gov.

The bottom line on scams

The best defense is to say NO if:

•          Anyone contacts you and asks for your Social Security number, bank account number, credit card information, Medicare ID number, or drivers license number.

•          Anyone contacts you asking for any other personally identifiable information by phone, in person, by text message, or email.

•          Someone you don’t know contacts you and requests money through a Peer to Peer (P2P) payment app like Venmo or Zelle or through pre-paid gift cards. These methods transfer funds immediately with little recall or retrieval capabilities and can be hard to trace, often making them the preferred choice of scammers.

•          Someone you don’t know sends you a check, maybe for prize-winnings or for the sale of goods and asks you to send a portion of the money back.

•          Something doesn’t feel right to you. Trust your gut and reserve the right to say no if it sounds too good to be true.

Make sure you protect your financial health!  Cedar Lane’s Service Coordinators are available to help you identify and report scams to the appropriate authorities.

Did You Know?

On this date in 1935, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, creating a government pension system for retired citizens.  The first social security check, number 00-000-01 was issued to Ida Mae Fuller of Ludlow, Vermont for $22.54.  Thanks President Roosevelt!

Sincerely,

Beverly Stickles

Community Update – August 7, 2020

Community Update: August 7, 2020

Dear community members:

St. Mary’s County recorded 84 new cases of COVID-19 last week, which serves as a timely reminder that we must remain COVID-safe and COVID-vigilant to keep our community as protected as possible. Here are this week’s news items for Cedar Lane:

COVID-19 Status on Our Campus:

As of today, there are still no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane. Continue to wear your mask and wash it frequently. If you need a new filter, please call the Front Desk and ask for Wanda Fenwick. Testing is available with no doctor’s order and no appointment for St. Mary’s County residents. To learn more, call the COVID-19 Community Hotline at 301-475-4911, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Signs of the Times:

You will start to see some decals going up around property that offer important reminders to help keep yourself and those around you safe during this ongoing health crisis.

Teleworking Staff Returning to Campus

You may have spotted some Cedar Lane staff members who have returned to campus. While it’s great to see their faces again, please do not knock on office doors. In order to keep residents and staff as safe as possible, we must all keep a social distance. Instead, please call the Front Desk and ask to be transferred to the person/department you wish to reach. We will assist you by phone or schedule an appointment using appropriate safety precautions. When paying your rent, please drop it in one of the rent boxes. Your completed confidentiality form can be left at the Front Desk for Kirk Turner or Crystal King.

Upcoming MOR for Building II

Several members of our team are preparing for an upcoming HUD Management and Occupancy Review for the Burch Building. All Section 8 project-based rental assistance programs are subject to these routine audits and inspections – even during a pandemic. Our staff members are hard at work checking and double-checking that everything is in compliance.

The Bus is Back in Business

The St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) has been restored to full service. If you have questions, you can phone the STS Office at 301-475-4200, ext. 1120.

Were you ready for that storm?

Tropical Storm Isaias ripped through our region with rains, winds and tornadoes, resulting in heavy flooding and downed trees. We were very fortunate here at Cedar Lane. As of yesterday, 1.8 million customers were still without power on the East Coast. Please report any storm leaks or damage to your apartments by calling the Front Desk.

Be prepared for severe weather

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts 2020 will be an above-average hurricane season. Predictions call for 19-25 named storms.  Out of those, three to six are forecasted to become major hurricanes of Category 3, 4 or 5. An average season brings three major hurricanes. Tornado Safety Tips for Apartment Buildings

With winds that can top 250 miles per hour, tornadoes are no joke. A tornado warning means that severe thunderstorms with tornados are imminent or are occurring, take immediate action to get in a safe place.  Remember:

  • Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls
  • Get as far inside the building as possible
  • Get as close to the ground as possible
  • Get into a small room, such as a closet or bathroom
  • Do not use the elevators

Turn Around Don’t Drown®

More flooding is in the forecast. Flooding is the leading cause of severe weather-related deaths in the U.S. Just six inches of water can knock you down, and a foot of water can carry away most cars. Remember, it is NEVER safe to drive or walk into floodwaters.

Community Update – July 31

Community Update: July 31, 2020

Dear community members:

On Wednesday, Governor Hogan announced a pause on further reopening plans for Maryland, triggered by a recent increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations. Here are the main takeaways from his press conference, along with some news items for Cedar Lane.

Expanded Masking Order for Maryland

Governor Hogan is expanding the statewide masking order that has been in effect since April 18. Under this order, which takes effect Friday, July 31 at 5:00 p.m., all Marylanders over the age of five are required to wear face coverings in the public spaces of all businesses across the state. Face coverings will also be required in outdoor public areas, whenever it is not possible to maintain physical distancing. The Governor says that wearing a mask is the single best mitigation strategy we have to fight the virus.

Out-of-State Travel Health Advisory

Marylanders are strongly advised against traveling to states with COVID-19 positivity rates of 10% or higher. Anyone traveling from these states should get tested and self-quarantine for 14 days.  This public health advisory — which takes effect immediately — applies to personal, family, or business travel of any kind. Marylanders are advised to postpone or cancel travel to these areas until their positivity rates decline. As of today, this advisory applies to Florida, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina, Nebraska, and Idaho.

Higher-Risk Activities:

Through contact tracing, Maryland has confirmed the top three sources of virus spread — family gatherings, house parties and outdoor events.  These are now considered higher-risk activities and should be avoided.

COVID-19 Status on Our Campus:

There are still no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedar Lane Senior Living Community.

Moratorium for evections has expired

In March, the Federal Government passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which temporarily banned evictions and late fees for renters. The protections covered in the Act expired last Friday, July 24, 2020. Property owners are required to provide renters with a 30-day notice to vacate before they can be evicted.

Quick Visual Apartment Inspections

Cedar Lane will be reinstituting regular apartment inspections beginning this August. In the interim, Facilities Director Calvin Boozer will be coming around to make a quick visual inspection of every apartment to determine condition and any necessary repairs, starting with the first floor of the Church Building. If you are not home when Calvin knocks on your door, he will come back later to complete the visual inspection.  Please continue to report all maintenance issues to the front desk.

Hot Weather Trash Tips

Summer and seafood go hand-in-hand, especially here in Maryland. But fish scraps, crab and clam shells can get very smell, very fast. After you’ve enjoyed a seafood feast, please be considerate of your neighbors’ noses and you take your bagged trash directly to the dumpster outside, rather than the trash rooms.

It’s Doggone Hot Outside – Summer Safety Tips for Dog Owners

Many pet parents don’t realize that during the summer months, hot pavement, asphalt, and dark or metal surfaces can very quickly become scorching hot – too hot for paws. Every summer, veterinarians treat dogs with serious, painful burns to their paw pads after a well-meaning parent took their dog for a walk without checking the temperature of the surface below. One quick, easy way to tell if the ground is too hot for your pup’s paws is to remember the “3-Second Rule.†Before walking your dog, place the back of your hand on the ground and hold it there for 3-seconds. If the heat is unbearable, please find another place to walk, outfit your pup with a pair of booties, or reschedule your walk for another time when the ground isn’t so hot. Walking in shaded, grassy areas is always best.

Of course you should never leave your dog in a car, no matter how quick you think your errand may be. Even with the windows cracked, a car’s interior can climb to more than 100 degrees in 10 minutes on an 85-degree day. And don’t forget, it’s important for both you and your dog to drink plenty of water on these hot, hazy, humid days of summer.

I hope you all have wonderful weekend and a happy start to August.

Sincerely,

Community Update – July 24

Community Update: July 24, 2020

Dear community members:

Here we are, already one month into summer. While our community remains free of any known COVID-19 cases, many of us are feeling worn out from this battle we’ve been fighting since March. We are tired of the worry, the restrictions, the isolation, and not knowing how or when it will all end. Now more than ever, we must have patience with each other and treat each other kindly.

COVID-19 Update:

Vacation season is here, and some Cedar Lane residents have travelled to states classified as coronavirus hot spots. The safest thing you can do is assume that everyone you encounter has been exposed. Wear a facemask and keep at least 6 feet of distance between you and everyone else. The week of July 12 saw the third highest number of new COVID-19 cases in St. Mary’s County since the pandemic began. Maryland health officials and some government leaders are even asking Governor Hogan to consider rolling back his reopening plan and re-imposing some restrictions to slow the virus spread.

We have done well so far in looking out for each other. With our continued safety in mind, I am reminding everyone that our community’s regular policies and rules remain in place as we monitor and adapt to COVID-19 developments.

Cedar Lane is a Smoke-Free Campus

Recently, I have received complaints about residents smoking on campus. Smoking is prohibited on Cedar Lane property, including individual apartments and all common spaces. The only area where smoking is permitted is the outdoor gazebo, located just past the parking lot. Everyone who lives here agreed to abide by this policy. Failure to comply can result in your eviction, and no one wants that to happen.

Use the Front Door for Everything

As a reminder, please do not open any of the secondary entrances or side doors to allow people to enter, hand things off to someone you know, or accept deliveries from family members or friends. As a protective measure, all entry and deliveries are limited to the main entrance only.   If you require assistance with a large item delivery, please contact the front desk.

Pet Waste Cleanup

Picking up pet waste is more than being a good neighbor – it is your obligation as a responsible pet owner living in an apartment community. Please do your part in keeping our community clean and safe.

Please Don’t Seal Rent Check Envelopes by Licking

In an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, the Finance Department is asking you not to lick the envelopes that you use when dropping off your rent checks. If using one of your own envelopes, please use a wet sponge or cloth to seal it. Better yet, reuse the self-seal envelope that your Cedar Lane statement came in!

Mask Filter Facts

Some of you have facemasks that require filters. Did you know coffee filters are perfect for this purpose? If you don’t have a coffee filter to use, you can request a new mask filter by calling the Front Desk and asking for Wanda.

Another Treat from Friends of Cedar Lane This August

The directors on the Friends of Cedar Lane board want to hear from you! They are planning to treat residents to another socially distanced meal this August. So the big question is, what would you like to have? It doesn’t even have to be dinner. It could be breakfast! Just keep in mind that the menu items need to be things that can be easily packaged and delivered at a safe temperature for consumption. Have ideas? Call the Front Desk and ask for Wanda to share your thoughts!

P.S. I hope you enjoyed your ice cream delivery from Tonya and Wanda on Tuesday. There’s nothing like ice cream on a hot summer day to make us all feel like kids again.
